Harmful Things Found at Home

 When you have a dog, it is VERY important that you understand all the things that dogs are unable to have.  Some of them may surprise you.  Everyone knows that dogs can’t have chocolate, but do you know all the other items that are poisonous or stimulant or even a choking hazard.

 Here is a list of things that dogs cannot have:

 Poisonous Human Foods Include:  Alcoholic beverages, Apple seeds, Avocados, Garlic, Grapes, Macadamia nuts, Moldy food, Mustard seeds, Onions, Onion powder, Raisins, Salt, Tomato leaves & stems, Walnuts, Xylitol (artificial sweetener in gum & mints)

 Unbaked yeast dough – swells in the intestinal tract

 Apricot pits, Cherry pits, Peach pits – choking hazard and poisonous.  There is something in the core of the pit which is poisonous. Bones from cooked meat – chicken bones splinter.  Pork chop bones are softer and easier to chew.

 Chocolate, Coffee/tea (caffeine) – stimulant.  Stimulant may not seem to be that bad, but many dogs are prone to cardiac problems.  If they eat too fast it could cause cardiac problems. 

 

 

Plants which dogs may not eat:  Azaleas, Crocus Bulbs, Daffodil Bulbs, Dieffenbachia, Lilies, Mistletoe, Mums, Philodendron, Poinsettia, Rhododendron, Tulip Bulbs

 Other yard and garden:  Bees, wasps and hornets could produce airway obstruction, sticks present personal injury issues.  The following are all poison:  Cocoa bean shell mulch, poisonous toads, potato leaves and stems, rhubarb leaves and stems, stagnant pond water, wild mushrooms, and yard treatments.

 Household Items, Medications and Common Chemicals:

Antifreeze, Human nutritional supplements, Prescription drugs, Mouse & Rat poison, Pool chemicals, Ointments containing Vitamin D, Cleaning supplies, Fluoride toothpaste, Garden chemicals, Pennies minted after 1982, and Zinc coated hardware.

Choking hazards and internal injuries:  Articles of clothing, Dental floss, Electrical chords, Rubber bands, Rubber gloves, String, Yarn, Chewed tennis balls.
